General Information
Established in 1890 as a boys’ boarding school, Hazelwood is steeped in history and has been shaping young minds for over 135 years. The School first opened its doors in 1890 to 38 boys aged between 8 and 13, under the leadership of its founding Headmaster, Edward Baily. On the very first day, Mr and Mrs Baily travelled into Oxted to bank the £200 in school takings. With remarkable foresight, he persuaded his wife to set aside £12 to spend on trees. That modest investment has gifted Hazelwood its beautiful grounds, now filled with mature trees, and remains one of the School’s most enduring legacies.
Today, Hazelwood is a thriving co-educational school for over 440 boys and girls aged 4 to 13. We are proud of our strong academic outcomes, exceptional pastoral care, outstanding sporting opportunities and a creative, forward-thinking curriculum. Our pupils move on to a wide range of leading independent senior schools, including Caterham, Sevenoaks, Whitgift, Reigate Grammar, Woldingham, Bedes, Hurstpierpoint, Worth and many others.
What makes Hazelwood special?
“At Hazelwood, our independence gives us the freedom to shape a curriculum and enrichment programme that is flexible, purposeful and truly relevant to the world our pupils are growing up in. This allows us to prepare them not just for school, but for the many journeys that lie ahead.
Our commitment to helping young people flourish has been at the heart of Hazelwood since our foundation in 1890, and it remains as strong today as it has ever been. Quite simply, our aim is to inspire confidence, creativity and compassion through purposeful, future-facing learning that is rooted in a strong sense of community.
We set high expectations for all our pupils and encourage them to think big about their own aspirations and achievements. I am enormously proud to lead Hazelwood. No two days are ever the same, and we are always moving forward. This shared energy drives us to do the right thing and to give our very best, every day.”

The Hazelwood Approach to Learning – The Learning Wheel
We believe in cultivating a sense of balance and humility and we foster an unshakable belief in the potential of every pupil.
Our learning wheel is a visual reminder of the importance of being people centred, where the wellbeing of pupils, staff and every member of our community, is our priority.
We use adaptive approaches to celebrate the uniqueness of every child, harness AI for personalised learning and connect lessons and learning to real-world relevance.
Our flexible classrooms empower pupils with choice and self-advocacy, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.
These strands of the wheel develop and encourage critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and agency. Together, these elements ensure a happy, nurturing and dynamic school experience.
